I took a ride out to Forrest Green Farm today. Well before I moved to Richmond, I started to do research on sources for all things garden and food related. In my quest for herb plants, this business was the first to show up. It did not disappoint.
About an hour out of Richmond off of highway 64 (not quite to Charlottesville), it was a pleasant drive. Much to my delight, I even spotted some pops of fall color along the side of the road. The change hasn't hit the big trees just yet, but some of the understory growth was definitely sporting bright yellow, orange and even some red leaves. But I digress...
Forrest Green Farm felt like its own private paradise. The gardens, greenhouses and sale tables for plants were impeccably kept. Particularly awesome was the display garden, which was lushly growing almost any herb you could think of. The pollinators sure were busy! Inside the little store there were also dried herbs, tinctures, fresh produce and other food and herbal products. While it's not something that I'm ready to take advantage of at this time, it's worth noting that they also offer CSA options.
The selection of purchases that came home with me includes...white sage, St. John's wort, motherwort, ashitaba, hops, valerian, and French sorrel plants. I also bought a jar of their herb farm honey and a bag of herb roasted pumpkin seeds for the drive home. It was definitely worth the trip out for the selection and quality of plants. Right now they have a wide variety of cool season vegetable starts as well. Check out the link above to their website to see all they have to offer (including classes!).
