This is not an alien concept to me. But now...it's for sure different. At the same time, because we have these ways to stay present in each others' lives, maybe it's not as intense as it might be. I have to say, this is shaping up to be a very weird year. Such strange energy. I count my blessings, though, and take things a day at a time. Avery keeps me on my toes!
It's the first full day of spring, but it feels like summer! The temps were in the mid 80s and it was slightly humid. Still, all in all not unpleasant. Tomorrow it's supposed to be 25 to 30 degrees cooler...oddly enough.
All this being the case, I wanted summer food for dinner so I made a couple salads...lentil with walnuts and olives, and asparagus with lemon and pistachios. There's still SubRosa bread left from my purchase earlier in the week so I'm set.
Life is weird right now...and it's going to be for a while. But I plan to eat well.
I used my log table today. There was a bottle of shiso soda in the fridge, left from, probably the end of last summer. I decided to crack it open, fill a pretty glass and take it out back to sip on this very warm, pretty much spring evening. The birds have been singing up a storm today and while I worked out in the garden I found lots of new seedlings coming up from last year's seeds...mainly bread seed poppy...yay!!
These days are just...so weird. But I take heart in the garden and in art and creativity. Looking out for each other, we'll be okay.
Avery on the lookout for deer across the street, and me admiring this afternoon's handiwork. I'm slowing getting the front garden in order. I love that when I'm out there working I get so many good words from folks (particularly these days when I see a lot more neighbors taking late afternoon walks!) ...waiting to see what's going to come in the garden this year. That just makes me so happy!
I had a dead pine in my back yard taken down yesterday. Before the guys hauled away all the pieces of the tree, I asked them to leave me a few chunks. I didn't know exactly what I was going to use them for, but they were quite appealing in any case. After a little bit of thought, I realized they'd make nice little tables for next to my chairs by the fire pit. There have been a number of times I've had a plate of food or glass of something to drink out there, and no place to set it down. Perfect! Better than cheapo resin things I kept thinking I'd pick up. Very aesthetically pleasing. Bonus...I'll have someplace to set my samovar when I finally fire it up!
...all our experiences and emotions.
Work was already busy but then an impromptu outside the home task came up. Fortunately, I didn't have to be in close proximity to other humans. But the task did consist of something pretty far outside my comfort zone, yet something I knew I had to face straight on. It was stressful and frustrating and through it I could feel myself just not wanting to be there. Then I would remind myself that it will progress and things always change. By the end of a very enervating hour or two, the thing got done successfully. It's something that I can give myself a pat on the back for and a rousing, "see, you did it after all!" Now after a few hours I finally feel my muscles starting to relax and unwind.
Things aren't changing too much for Avery and I. Although it would be nice be able to procure toilet paper at some point this week.
What a strange time right now. But how lucky we are to have ways to keep in touch! Anyway, I'm not usually around a lot of people. I spent the better part of the day digging in dirt, moving mulch around, getting a space ready for planting. I'm beat and barely functioning at this point, so here are two more pinholes...
I'm trickling out this last roll of pinholes because I'm holding myself back from using up more of my Instax film! And...I don't have other film ready to go. And...I've been working and working on the garden and need to create more time for art (after all, it is a priority).
The world is pretty crazy right now. It doesn't make for feeling grounded or focused. That being said, I'll allow for some of my randomness...perhaps less discipline in certain areas. I'm also going to allow for simply being with pleasure...whether it's eating good food, or sitting and listening to birdsong, or feeling the sunshine on my skin. It's okay to take time to really and truly chill, because we all need that on the regular right now.
I hope you're all hanging in there...that you are well...that life will unfold with ease for you (as much as possible).
I didn't know her. Honestly, I don't know the Polish term for great grandmother (grandmother is "babcia"). She was from a town that is now in the Ukraine. A grandmother of hers a few more generations back came from the Ashkenazi community (according to my DNA). At what point and why did this ancient grandma leave the Jewish community? It's interesting to think of what distills in each generation, from the previous generations. What makes me...me?
