Up until now, this summer has been relatively mild. There have been no super intense storms. It has been a bit on the dry side. The temps haven't stayed extremely hot for more than a couple days at a time. In between there have also been very pleasant, low humidity days when the temps were mild.
That all changes this week. Every day will be in the 90s with lots of humid air, occasionally punctuated by some rain (but low chances on that).
The garden will need extra TLC, making sure everything is well hydrated. As far as mulch goes, it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to get some extra down. And yes, the lawns need mowing because of how thick the growth gets, but since it doesn't get particularly tall, I may let it go (sorry neighbors...but I know we're all in the same boat!).
There's a lot of life out there which has been enjoyable to see. Two hummingbirds are now hanging out, tussling a bit from time to time. The goldfinches are loving on all the blooms. Mountain mint is a favorite of a variety of pollinators. And there are three (what I believe to be) tiger swallowtail caterpillars on the aging dill. The native hibiscus is finally blooming along with another color of gladiola.
But back to the heat and real summer. It always seems to occur that when it stays hot and humid for days on end, I start thinking of fall. I'm probably not the only one. It happens here but it also happened when we lived in Phoenix for nine years. I hadn't really thought about autumn until now, with me asking the question, "I wonder if Michael's has Halloween stuff yet?" It's a random hanker. I'm pretty well connected to summer because the garden is at its height. Still, it's interesting to note.
