Although my brother and sister-in-law have downsized their home, John makes very effective use of the space he has to garden. Multiple fruit trees dot the perimeter of the house. With a couple varieties of avocados, three or four varieties of mango, banana plants and more tropicals, it's terribly impressive. I've come back home to think about maximizing the space I have to garden (taking into consideration the shade).
It was fun to see what grows in a tropical climate. Tomatoes ripening in February? Cool! Everything was quite lush, even though there are a few deciduous trees around, just coming into leaf again. While I know I'll never be able to grow them to fruiting, I'm going to experiment starting some papaya plants with seeds from one I bought. Seeing other people's gardens is always inspiring to me.
Yesterday I topped up the container beds with compost. The rest of the compost waits to be placed around all the fruiting plants and perennials. Today is rainy, but the weekend looks to be quite lovely. I know what I'll be doing. In the meantime, I believe today will be good for getting some seeds starting inside.
