It's very muggy out today, especially after a decent afternoon thundershower. I'm not going to complain about the rain at this point! That being said, I didn't do any major garden work today. I did, however, harvest more than I expected!
The beets have done really well this year, which makes me very happy! Zucchini are sort of eking along, but that's okay. Japanese eggplant (two varieties) have just provided their first fruits. Lettuce is on its last legs. Cukes are ramping up. Vining beans are providing just enough for me. Raspberries keep on coming. The black currants aren't really ripe enough yet but...if I don't get them a little early either the birds will or it'll get really hot and humid and they'll get over ripe.
With the raspberries and black currents, I made a base for a new fermented soda. I'll be adding the dregs from the last batch of soda for a starter...crossing my fingers. The beets are destined for a few different dishes, but today I took a couple small ones, grated them up and covered them with gin. I've made this beet gin before (from the Kachka Cookbook) and it's lovely in cocktails.
Sometimes I wish I had more sunny land for the garden. But when I get a harvest like this for lil old me...well, I'm quite grateful!
